Spravato Treatment in Staunton, VA

Overcome Treatment-Resistant Depression

Nasal spray Spravato™ contains esketamine, a recent addition to the range of treatments available for depression and other mood disorders. If you have depression that isn’t improving using other approaches, contact psychiatrist Timothy Kane, MD and his team at Comprehensive Behavioral Health , located in Staunton, Virginia, to discuss your suitability for treatment with Spravato.

  • What is Spravato?

Spravato is an innovative new therapy for patients who have treatment-resistant depression. When used in conjunction with antidepressant medication, Spravato can reduce the symptoms of major depressive disorder even when other treatment approaches aren’t working.

Spravato is a nasal spray rather than a pill. Comprehensive Behavioral Health is a registered Spravato clinic, and practitioners administering the treatment have undergone training in the safe delivery of Spravato. You need to take your medication at the clinic, and your provider keeps you under observation for two hours afterward, so they can monitor you in case you experience any adverse reactions.

Spravato’s active ingredient is esketamine, a newly patented form of ketamine that has FDA approval.

  • What is ketamine?

Ketamine is a drug primarily used for sedation and pain relief. In recent years, the value of ketamine in treating depression has come to light, and now ketamine is used as a specific treatment for depression and other mood disorders.

Studies show that up to 75% of patients receiving ketamine therapy for treatment-resistant depression respond positively to the treatment.

Comprehensive Behavioral Health recognizes the value of ketamine in treating depression, particularly treatment-resistant depression. The practice offers Spravato intranasal esketamine spray.

  • Why would I need to take Spravato?

Spravato is an essential element of the ketamine-assisted psychotherapy program at Comprehensive Behavioral Health. Spravato is a good alternative, as it is a simple spray delivered into your nose that is covered by most insurances.

  • How many Spravato treatments would I need?

You need to attend a series of sessions to get the most out of your treatment. This can vary between patients, but a typical course of Spravato treatment might involve two sessions a week for four weeks then one session a week for four weeks.

Your Spravato treatment sessions take place under supervision at Comprehensive Behavioral health. You need to have someone drive you home afterward, as you might experience some side effects such as drowsiness or impaired responses.

What is Depression?

Depression is a serious medical illness affecting more than 16 million American adults every year, 6.7% of all U.S. adults. Often a debilitating disorder, depression results in a persistent state of sadness or loss of interest or pleasure which interferes with an individual's thoughts, behavior, mood, and physical health.

Economic Burden of Depression

In 2010, the economic burden of depression was estimated at $210 billion in the US and depression was the second leading cause of disability, accounting for almost 20% of all years of life lost to disability and premature death.

A Lethal Disease

Depression can be a lethal disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) WISQARS Leading Causes of Death Reports, in 2017, suicide was the tenth leading cause of death overall in the United States, claiming the lives of over 47,000 people. Statistics show that 60% of these suffered from depression. Overall, women are almost twice as likely as men to suffer from depression; however, some experts feel that depression in men is under-reported. Depression has no racial, ethnic or socioeconomic boundaries. About two-thirds of those who experience an episode of depression will have at least one other episode in their lives.

Causes of Depression

While the exact cause of depression is not known, the leading scientific theory is that depression is caused by decreased activity in the neural networks of the brain that regulate emotion and motivation. Increasing levels of neurotransmitters in the brain has been found to reactivate these neural networks, or create new networks. Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that send signals between brain cells.

Antidepressant Medications

Depression is most often treated with antidepressant medications. It is believed that antidepressant medications work by increasing the levels of these neurotransmitters. However, more than 4 million patients do not receive adequate benefit from antidepressants and/or cannot tolerate the side effects caused by them, which is why we offer new treatments such as TMS Therapy.
